San Gabriel, Los Angeles County
Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was founded in 1771 and moved to its present site a few years later. The fortress-like stone church, finished in 1805, has buttressed walls unlike those of any other California mission. In 1781 the settlers who founded Los Angeles set out from here. A fire in 2020 destroyed the roof, and the restored church in San Gabriel reopened in 2023.
